The Stanley Museum has graciously invited The
Wheelmen to participate in the recreation of the Stanley Land Speed
record set on Ormond Beach in 1906. This steam powered vehicle,
driven by dare-devil Fred Marriott, set the mark that became Ormond Beach's
most famous land speed record. The incredible speed of 127.659 mph
held for four years, a remarkable achievement in a speed age where records
sometimes fell within the hour.
This event will put gas and steam vehicles head-to-head just as in 1906.
Many antique car enthusiasts will bring their period machines to participate
in this event. Governed by the tide, the beach event itself is to
start at 9 a.m, Thursday, January 26. Flags and banners on the beach
and throughout the city will lend a festive air. Antique airplanes are
to fly over at the start of the demonstration runs. Live broadcasting
on radio and TV and professional film crews recording for at least one
documentary promise to heighten the excitement these vintage vehicles
already command on this historic beach.
The itinerary for The Wheelmen is as follows: Arrive Tuesday, January
24th: The Corel Beach Resort Motel has been chosen as Meet Headquarters. The motel is located
in Ormand Beach, Florida with all events taking place nearby. It would be advisable to
make reservations here or nearby as soon as possible.

January 25th: The Wheelmen have been invited to a reception at The
Casements, the winter hideaway of John D. Rockefeller, courtesy of Stella's
At The Beach and S.R. Perrott, The Stanley Museum and the city of Ormond Beach. Complimentary
full-meal-quality hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served at the reception. Wheelmen are to be dressed in
period attire with their bicycles. An area will be set aside to
display bicycles and antique cars. Thursday, January 26th: Beach events will be from 9:00 a.m. to noon. All Wheelmen
participating in this event must be dressed in period attire for film crews. In the afternoon,
Wheelmen will return to The Casements to answer questions and demonstrate
their bicycles to the general public. Friday, January 27th:
Even though the Stanley Centennial continues with a few antique car tours,
our part of the event is over. This day is open to visit any of the numerous
attractions such as Daytona USA and Daytona International Speedway or a host
of theme parks in nearby Orlando. Depending on the attendance, other
Wheelmen activities may be planned for this day.
This meet will not have an official meet registration though you will be
asked to sign a waiver form. Please inform the meet coordinator if you
are planning to attend. If you have questions, please call Bill Smith at
