I'm hoping to do a little bit of research on the Detroit Rambler Club. I imagine there is a connection to the Rambler bicycle. I've seen there were Rambler clubs in other cities.

Here's a club photo that has created questions for me that some of you might be able to answer.

1. Are those Rambler bikes?
2. It doesn't appear to be a Rambler bicycle logo, or am I mistaken?

This 1896 photo is significant since it has an African-American holding the club banner. Louis "Birdie" Munger helped form this club and of course he was a lifetime supporter and friend of Major Taylor.

Unfortunately the museum that has this photo does not have a key to the people in the photo.

Rider #31 has a G&J Rambler saddle accessory that you can see clamped to the top tube. They were made from hickory. The photo isn't sharp enough at least for me to tell if the bikes are Ramblers or not.

The tandem sure looks like a Rambler to me. I have a few rambler tandems and all the trademarks of frame design are there.

Any hint as to what building that is?
A club building perhaps?

They're posing in front of Detroit's old city hall per the Detroit Historical Society text" "Black and white photo of 36 members of the Detroit Rambler Club (bicycle club). The members are standing on the steps of the Detroit City Hall with two bicycles (one single and one tandem) along with their club flag. Some of the club members are wearing sweaters that have the same logo that is shown on the club flag. A typewritten label on the verso notes "#6343, Detroit Rambler Club on steps of City Hall in 1896." A white number is handwritten on each member, but no key to their identities is included."

The Detroit Wheelmen had clubhouses but I'm not aware of the Rambler Club having one. They were formed in 1887 with 15 members, some of whom were former members of the Detroit Bicycle Club.

Looks like you have the correct building judging by the entrance columns.

Unfortunately the building no longer exists.

There is a padded G&J seat on eBay as of last night like the one illustrated. Not mine and no interest in it.

My G&J RAMBLER is listed in our FOR SALE column with the link to my ebay auction. No badge and no threaded holes on steering head tube to mount one. Must have been a decal on the steering head tube at one time.

I also have a G&J TANDEM for sale with a wrap around embossed badge and screws mounting on the rearward side of the steering head tube that I haven't listed yet. Contact me for pnotos.
