I have an 1887 G & J 52" Challenge, with markings and components that match up (rim, forks, spine...). During restoration, I noticed that the hub (radial) is marked: C. 54 (with the C. above the 54). "Presuming" that the "54" stands for 54", I'm wondering if there might have been different hubs for different sizes? I don't know why the other sizes might take a different hub unless maybe a different spoke count somewhere between the smallest and largest sizes (my 52" rim takes 56 spokes, same as the hub). Would be interested in any thoughts.

I've seen the letter "C" stamped on Challenge and Champion models. So why isn't the American Ideal stamped with the letter "I" on the hub? My hunch is the C stands for something else. Maybe someone else can chime in here with some info.
